Department Manager

Summary/Objective:
The Department Manager is responsible for day-to-day supervision and leadership to a product-focused and product-specific department. This position manages with fairness and consistency the quality, efficiencies, labor costs, food and personnel safety, personnel, scheduling, sanitation, cleaning and department system issues.

  1. Ensure effective employee relations. Coach and counsel employees; document/discuss performance reviews on a timely basis along with performing regular staff meetings to address issues and organize shift changes. Resolve employee issues through problem resolution.
  2. Manage departmental performance measures, including visual controls and provide regular progress reports to managers.
  3. Work assigned schedule.
  4. Comply with the company’s Personnel Policies and Procedures, Safety Procedures, Quality Assurance Policies & Procedures and timekeeping policy.
  5. Responsible for re-packaging of product in containers, bags, or boxes depending on order requirements.
  6. Assist with inventory control through lot tracking and product deduction procedures.
  7. Assist with maintaining back stock area.
  8. May operate pallet jack, hand trucks and blenders.
  9. Keep workstation cleaned and organized throughout the day. Help with cleaning packing floor at the end of day, weekly and monthly as directed for food safety purposes.
  10. Work closely with other team members and help as needed or instructed.
  11. Lift 75+ lbs. boxes of products throughout the day in different environments.
  12.  Help with fulfillment needs. Fill and seal bags using auger fillers and band/hand sealers.
  13. Responsible for final check at the end of each work day to ensure working area is cleaned and is working condition to include, but not limited to tables, totes, floors and tools.
  14. Work closely with Quality Assurance Manager, assisting with information gathering, performing accident investigations and follow-ups.
  15. Ensure a safe work environment.
  16. Track absenteeism and timekeeping and assist with making employment decisions to include, but not limited to hiring, selection, advancement, transfer, promotion and termination decisions for the department along with adequate training of department staff.
  17. Balance quality, productivity, cost, safety and morale to achieve results in all areas. Work to continuously improve in all areas.
  18. Manage special projects to completion, assess results and provide feedback.
  19. Provide input and guidance on new equipment purchases along with acting as a resource center of information for other departments.
  20. Maintain accurate records for department and completion of required Quality Assurance records in a timely manner.
  21. Manage department priorities.

Supervisory Responsibility
This position is responsible for the management of employees within the department.

Work Environment
This job operates in a spice production environment. Employee may be exposed to strong dust or odors. Employee may be required to work in a dusty environment at times. Employee must NOT be allergic to nuts, spices or herbs.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move 50 to 75lbs.  Employee will be standing for long periods of time, bending and walking. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time position. Hours of work are Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., 40 hours per week. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand.

Travel
No travel is expected for this position.

Required Education and Experience

  1. High School Diploma or GED
  2. Two (2) years previous experience in production or manufacturing
  3. HAACP Certification or the ability to become certified
  4. Food Manager Certification or the ability to become certified
  5. Other certifications as needed for position.

Preferred Education and Experience

  1. Associate Degree or Vocational Training in food management and/or science
  2. Two (2) years previous experience in management.
  3. Four (4) years previous experience in production or manufacturing.
